ListeningOk, folks, I’m hoping you might be able to answer a question for me about the direction of this blog. Here’s your chance to weigh in on the kind of stuff that gets posted.

I’ve been wondering if you like the focus being solely about things related to Carpentersville … or if you would like to see a slightly extended focus … maybe not just on news, information, opinion (and the occasional gossip) … but also related to certain trends, consumer information, etc.

Do you like the way things are now? Does anything need tweaking? Is there something I’m missing that would make the site more useful? Accessible? What about reaching the residents that don’t already know about this site?

I don’t need a dissertation or a huge explanation — even a sentence or two would be helpful to me, and potentially to others who use or might be interested in this site.

I’d heard some rumblings that there might be some dissension in the ranks of Fox Valley Citizens for Legal Immigration (FVCFLI). The group is primarily responsible for the drive to establish ordinances in Carpentersville targeting Hispanics illegal immigrants.  Apparently, despite my previous report that there were no fireworks, it seems that some of the conflict spilled over into the meeting of the Village Board last night.

Carpentersville resident and a former candidate for Village trustee, Frank Stoneham, came forward during public comments to provide information about FVCFLI and its Chairman, Bob Sperlazzo.

According to Stoneham, a member of FVCFLI, if you disagree with Sperlazzo in anyway you are told to sit down and shut up and even thrown out of their meetings.

Well, at least the Board seemed to have a good night.

I stumbled across a couple the blog of Scott H Young this morning. While I regularly happen upon blogs with various intents and directions, there were at least two postings here that I felt could be of benefit to readers of Carpentersville Action Network — and I definitely thought about the Village Board when I read through some of the items in these lists.

The first post is titled “The Critical 7 Rules To Understand People“. Here’s an example:

Rule One: Never blame malice for what can easily be explained by conceit. (or ignorance)

People don’t care about you. This isn’t because people are mean or hurtful, but simply because they are mostly focused on themselves.

The rest of the post is also definitely worth the read.

The next post that caught my eye was “9 Steps to Stop Information Poisoning”.

A small amount of water reduces thirst. A large amount can poison you. The same principle applies to information. A small, carefully chosen amount can enhance your ability to make smart decisions. Too much and you fare no better than chance.

And, then of course, in all this one shouldn’t Underestimate the Power of Humility.

Don’t be too sure you have all the answers or you might not find new ones.

I trust the members of the Board we able to get a good night’s sleep last night seeing that the Village Board meeting ended right around 9:30pm — and not because of an abrupt adjournment! Even Trustee Ritter commented that it seemed to be too early.

I’ll have to wait for reports from others who attended the entire meeting, because I decided to hop on over to Algonquin’s Village Board meeting to get a feeling for how they do things. It was as different from Carpentersville as night and day!

Starting about 10 minutes after the scheduled 8pm start time due to a brief recess following a special 7:30pm meeting/hearing of the Liquor commission, it concluded at by 8:40pm — a mere 30 minutes! By a single voice vote consent, they approved 5 amendments, including two related to impoundment and towing of vehicles of those caught in the act of a felony or serious repeat offenders. Presentations were made to the Board at the previous meeting of the Board.

Staff reported status and plans on current and future projects to the Board. Very orderly. Board and staff were very knowledgeable; very professional; and raised appropriate questions that did not go on and on.

Short. Sweet. To the point.

Though Carpentersville’s Village Board meeting started a half-hour earlier than Algonquin’s, I was able to catch the latter part of the meeting after Algonquin’s ended and I drove back.

Despite taking 2 hours, there were: No sparks. No fireworks. No arguments. (At least not while I was there.)

And that was it.

See?! I knew you all had it in you.  ;-)
